What Are Bodyguard Duties and Responsibilities?
Bodyguard Training
Armed Bodyguard
Unarmed Bodyguard
Bodyguard Training Whether armed or unarmed, all private bodyguards undergo extensive training. While this will, of course, include varying degrees of combat tutelage, the hallmark of the best unarmed and armed Bodyguards is the ability to recognize and diffuse any potentially
volatile situation. Such proficiency is crucial, preventing the escalation of an incident
before it occurs.
Further training includes that of risk assessment, something especially vital when it comes
to the field of armed executive or close protection. Strategic analysis of real, potential, and
possible risk, with multiple action plans for any eventuality, are crucial skills of the armed
close protection agent.
The number of private armed bodyguards is on the increase, and are a common sight in
many public areas. These include places such as banks, schools, and churches.
Every state has slightly differing license and certification requirements surrounding the
regulation of armed bodyguards. When carrying out their duties there’s always the
potential of having to discharge their weapon, therefore each individual must have the
expertise to store, care for, and correctly utilize the firearm should the situation arise.
Such a responsibility naturally warrants extensive and ongoing training.
Armed Bodyguard
The duties of the armed Bodyguard will differ somewhat, depending on the particular role
in which they’re employed. For instance, the daily routine of those who work in a school
environment will be significantly distinct from those who work as an armed executive
protection officer. However, the underlying responsibilities and obligations remain the
same.
These include:
– The protection of property and/or persons
– To prevent criminal acts from taking place—such as theft, vandalism, hostility,
violence, attacks, etc.
– Recognize and diffuse potential criminal and/or violent situations
– React with force (lethal if necessary) should the situation warrant
While armed security guards do, of course, have a right to draw and discharge their
weapons, this will always be the very last course of action.
Such a position of responsibility calls for very particular personal skills that are further
enhanced by training specific to that of the security guard. These include, but certainly
aren’t restricted to,
– Situational awareness
– The ability to recognize body language and behaviors that might be cause for concern
– Exceptional communication skills
– An impeccable attitude regarding confidentiality
Unarmed Security Guard
To work as a commercial armed Bodyguard, the individual must have first completed all
the requirements to work in an unarmed capacity. As well as various elements of training,
each will be required to undergo specific background checks to confirm their right to work
in the St Maarten and the absence of any serious criminal convictions.
ISPS Code requires from a shipping organization to conduct security internal audits in an effort to monitor and assess the level of managed vessels’ compatibility to security regulations and the effectiveness of the implemented Ship Security Plan. What is an RSOAn organization with appropriate expertise in security matters and with appropriate knowledge of ship and port operations authorized to carry out an assessment, or a verification, or an approval or a certification activity, required by SOLAS chapter XI-2 or by part A of the ISPS Code. RSOs can be approved by flag State Administrations to:
1) carry out ship security assessments;
(2) prepare ship security plans;
(3) review and approve ship security plans, or amendment to Plans; and
(4) carry out initial and subsequent verifications of ships. RSOs approved by some flag States include classification societies and private security firms.
In general, internal audits should be carried out by independent personnel who
have received appropriate training. The audit is carried out at the workplace, with
the use of checklist(s) for recording appropriate items; however, the auditor may
deviate from the list to include additional items and important issues which emerge
as the audit progresses.
As far it concerns security internal audits, Company Security Officer (CSO) is
responsible for the schedule of internal audits onboard, ensuring that every part of
the ship security plan on board vessels is audited once per calendar year, and at
any other greater frequency, as deemed necessary. However, the CSO may initiate
unscheduled audits if any serious deficiency becomes apparent from dangerous
occurrences, review of records or during routine operations. Additionally, it is CSO’s
responsibility to assign an auditor at a convenient time prior to the audit.
Every year concerts around the country go off without significant security issues. It’s
when something goes catastrophically wrong, that we suddenly hear about it in the news
media. There can be fights, riots, and even worse. But just because an event took place,
and there was no media coverage reporting some unlawful activity, doesn’t necessarily
mean that everything went off “without a hitch.”
In most every instance when a large public gathering takes place, there are security issues.
The reason we don’t hear about them, however, is because professional security
personnel is on hand to ensure that small problems don’t escalate out of control. But
increasingly this is a job that requires greater degrees of training and expertise.
The most recent illustration of this growing need for professional security is the concert
shooting that was part of the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. In that attack at Le Bataclan,
89 people died. And even in venues as small as nightclubs, as we saw in the Orlando
shootings of 2016, there are still significant security risks at every turn. Since then,
concert security has become a major issue worldwide. It has also become a major concern
for promoters and concertgoers alike.
